DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The University Library Center for Digital Scholarship encompasses our programing across two physical spaces: The David Kirk Digital Scholarship Commons (DSC) in McHenry Library and the Digital Scholarship Innovation Studio (DSI) in the Science & Engineering Library. This position is primarily based in the DSI, but will also spend time in the DSC. More information can be found here: https://guides.library.ucsc.edu/DS/Home JOB SUMMARY This position is primarily responsible for offering introductory level training necessary for patrons to use the equipment in the Digital Scholarship Innovation Studio (DSI) (https://guides.library.ucsc.edu/DS/DSI/Home) and for maintaining the equipment and materials inventory for the DSI equipment. The workshops that this individual runs on safety and introductory courses are offered online through a Canvas module and in person a minimum of once per week for equipment that requires introductory training to use (currently the Ultimaker 3 printers, the Glowforge printers, and the Prusa Printers with a Palette Mosaic attachment). The Digital Scholarship Technologist will also collaborate with Digital Scholarship Librarians to support additional training for classes. The person in this position will be based in the DSI on the ground floor of the Science & Engineering Library, but will also help support the equipment in the David Kirk Digital Scholarship Commons (DSC). The individual in this position will work closely with our DSI Student Assistants to oversee the use of the DSI, support students working in the space, and maintain a safe working environment. The successful candidate will play a key part in our efforts to create an inclusive program. APPOINTMENT INFORMATION Budgeted Salary: $56,8000 - $78,000/Annually. Develop educational activities and materials in support of classes and workshops of highly complex and specialized nature in collaboration with Digital Scholarship Librarians Analyze, evaluate, interpret, and revise or propose revisions to established DSI operational guidelines and materials Provide additional support for classes in collaboration with Digital Scholarship Librarians Revise and update online and in-person training material as necessary and appropriate 30% - Digital Scholarship Equipment Maintenance and Management Maintain an internal inventory of equipment including individual pieces of replacement parts for when something needs to be replaced Troubleshoot equipment when it's not working properly Reach out to dealer or manufacturer for support when necessary Manage the organization and ordering of supplies for the DSI Work with the Digital Scholarship Library Assistant to support the organization and ordering of supplies for the DSC when needed Assist with the implementation of new technology as needed Work with Reserves and Metadata services when needed to maintain Library Management System records for equipment and keep up with best practices 10% - Lab and Computer Management Liaison Serve as the Digital Scholarship point of contact for Library ITS Maintain a software list needed for the various computers that Digital Scholarship needs Continue to work with Library ITS to update and maintain best practices for lab needs in the DSC and the DSI 10% - Website Management Work with the DS department to maintain and update website content as needed including working with students to make sure our digital technology tutorials are relevant and up to date Maintain best practices around writing for the web, user experience, and accessibility needs on our website content 10% - Digital Scholarship Events and Workshop support Help set up and take down event items for Digital Scholarship supported events/workshops Collaborate with Digital Scholarship Librarians to identify best practices for holding events/workshops in the space. Provide support for students or instructors who are running workshops or collaborating with Digital Scholarship Librarians on an event. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS At least 1 year of demonstrated experience in a makerspace environment (such as community, academic, or personal) working with technical equipment (e.g. a laser cutter, 3D printer, or computer aided cutting machine). Excellent communication skills with ability to explain complex, technical concepts to users from a variety of technical backgrounds using various methods (e.g. in person or online, synchronous or asynchronous). Demonstrated skill in organizing, monitoring, and setting priorities for a heavy workload with multiple tasks and competing deadlines. Demonstrated ability with troubleshooting and problem solving issues related to technical equipment. Demonstrated ability to train groups using existing documentation. Advanced communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work productively with library staff, student assistants, and users from culturally diverse backgrounds, including providing leadership to other library staff members. Demonstrated success working in a collaborative, team-based work environment. Demonstrated ability to give, receive, evaluate, and apply constructive feedback. Demonstrated ability to take initiative and learn new technology. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Demonstrated ability to work with spreadsheets to manage inventory. Demonstrated ability to engage with stakeholders on behalf of a project, issue, or organization. Demonstrated ability to continually assess work-flow processes with an eye toward efficiency and best practices.
